Otho supposed it was inevitable that he would bump into Varro outside the Senate sooner or later. They were both aediles now and spent a lot of time around the courts. He knew that Varro had been avoiding him since his marriage to Aurelia. A guilty conscience, perhaps.

But today, Varro headed straight for him, scrolls tucked under his arm and two slaves in tow, trying to appear brusque and important. He actually looked a little drunk. He never watered down his wine these days and had taken to visiting the taverns on the Palatine long before lunch.

Sure enough, Otho could smell sour wine on his breath. Here was a man looking for trouble.

‘Otho. I hear you paid a visit to my wife.’

‘We are old friends.’

‘She is my wife. If you wish to talk to her, you had better come and see me first and await a proper invitation. All right?’

‘As you wish.’

‘Good.’ Varro staggered away.

‘I hear you’re going to Aegyptus,’ Otho called after him.

Varro stopped and turned around. The bluster drained out of him. ‘I have been promoted. I shall take up the post of senior tribune at our garrison there.’

‘Congratulations. Such an honour.’

‘Thank you,’ he said, unsure if he was being made fun of.

Promotion! Otho thought. I suppose you could look at it that way. It was better than calling it an exile. He wondered what Varro had done to earn Caesar’s displeasure. Perhaps even he thought Varro drank and womanized too much.

Aegyptus. His mother was right. He should forget about Aurelia. There would be no more visits for a while, not when she was living in Alexandria.
